About what happened on May 19, 1895 Maximo Gomez would narrate to Don Thomas Estrada Palma years later: ′′ And why did you let him launch (Mart í)? You could watch me. At some distance from the enemy I ordered him to retire, he scorned my order and while I ordered the charge it was not possible for me to look at Mart í. When I was able to notice her fall, the most I could do was, I did, just jump in to see if she picked up her body. It was not possible, and I can assure you that I have never seen myself in such danger.» In a missive of that same month, sent to Benjamin Guerra, Gomez gave other details: ′′ That day we heard the fires at a distance of more than half a league from our camp, and when I come, with the people I had, to meet him , Marti is walking beside me. ′′ You go back, Marti, it is not now your position, I ordered you, several heard. He stops, it’s true, a little bit of his horse, but I with all my attention on the enemy, do not look at Marti anymore, in the abrupt affliction that was given to the enemy that day.» ·
