Writer Enrique del Risco recalls the validity of El Bobo de Abela in Cuba today. Abela first published a cartoon of El Bobo in 1926 in the humorous magazine The Week, but it quickly became popular until it reached the Marine Diario until 1934. Bobo was characterized by his irony, his comments on the country’s politics through what he shuts up, a way to avoid censorship during the years of Gerardo Machado’s dictatorship.
