CHIFLÓ EL MONO.

CHIFLÓ EL MONO… ¿Dónde y cuándo en Cuba surgió tan socorrida frase, la cual ha trascendido generaciones? Según la leyenda durante los primeros años del siglo XX, la familia Betharte, propietaria del central Macagua, municipio de Santo Domingo, provincia de Santa Clara, tenía un jardín japonés y en él una jaula con forma de pagoda donde vivía una pareja de monos gibones, llamados Simón y Simona.
Una madrugada de invierno, y con el azote de vientos fuertes, se escucharon chillidos constantes y agudos provenientes del lugar donde vivían los primates. Al día siguiente los vecinos del batey aseguraban que el frío había sido tanto que hasta los monos de Macagua habían chiflado durante toda la noche. Al parecer tales aullidos penetrantes al ser escuchados en el silencio de una noche campestre por los residentes del batey, fueron confundidos con chiflidos. Lo cierto es que cuando hace mucho frio los cubanos desde hace mucho tiempo decimos que:

It seems such penetrating howls as they were heard in the silence of a country night by the residents of the batty, were confused with nutcases.
